OMBA Trail Projects
Lower Dadd Gulch
The Lower Dadd Gulch Trail is popular among Northern Colorado mountain bikers due to its shuttle-friendly access, moderate climbs, and scenic backcountry experience. Its less-trafficked route in Poudre Canyon and proximity to Fort Collins attract riders seeking to avoid crowded areas. However, some segments have become unsustainable, facing issues like erosion and ecological damage. This project aims to create purposeful reroutes that are ecologically sound and enjoyable, utilizing natural rock features and improved drainage. Additionally, it proposes adjustments to the trail’s upper terminus and a new singletrack connector linking Lower and Upper Dadd Gulch, enhancing trail mileage and navigation. Overall, this work will revitalize the trail, protect sensitive areas, and minimize user conflict.
Hewlett Gulch Phase 2
Hewlett Gulch is the most popular multi-use trail in the Canyon Lakes Ranger District, appealing to a diverse group due to its beginner-friendly terrain and shade. It features an easy 2-mile lower section along the creek and a more difficult 4-mile upland loop. Many users, especially families with dogs, often turn back at the junction. The trail revitalization project, led by Overland Mountain Bike Association, aims to create a sustainable reroute in the northern segment, enhancing the user experience and interaction with the gulch's ecosystem while improving sightlines and rest points. Phase 1 was completed in 2025. Phase 2 is scheduled for 2026 and will focus on improving the switchback section of the outer loop and additional improvements along the lower sections. Phase 3 is scheduled for 2027 and will focus on a larger reroute as part of the outer loop section. Numerous bike-optimized features are being added to many sections of the trail.
Foothills Trail
Foothills Trail is the most used trail and offers the closest access for mountain bikers within the City of Fort Collins. This 9.6-mile trail climbs and descends the first hogback on the west side of town several times, crossing multiple agency boundaries along its way, including city, county, state, and federal lands. OMBA’s work here in 2026 will focus on drainage and tread improvements starting in the “Research” section near the west end of Laporte Ave and working north.
North Lone Pine
The North Lone Pine Trail is a classic Colorado high-country ride. Sitting above Red Feather Lakes Village to the west, the trail tops out at an elevation of 10,700’. The trail is currently characterized by two different styles: wide and smooth on the lower half, and narrow with chunky rocks on the upper half. The one consistent aspect is the steady climb throughout its 4.5-mile length. This project will focus on improving routing through the rocky upper half to enhance the experience for all users, especially mountain bikers.
DR Trail
The DR Trail at Bobcat Ridge in Fort Collins is a popular destination for mountain bikers, hikers, and runners. This trail was originally not intended for bicycle use; however, that changed in 2023. OMBA and FCNA are committed to improving this trail to provide a better experience for mountain bikers and enhance its durability amid increased use.
