Dig Day Difficulty Ratings

Beginner

This category is well-suited for volunteers of all backgrounds and experience levels, making it an inclusive opportunity. It includes a range of light maintenance tasks, specifically requiring no heavy lifting. Thus, the work is ideal for beginners entering the field for the first time, as well as for those seeking an entry point into the rewarding area of corridor maintenance. This approach supports skill-building and encourages participation in maintenance activities.

Intermediate

Requires moderate physical effort, including lifting between 25 and 45 lbs. Work areas are typically accessible, around 1-2 miles (s) from the parking lot. Suitable for volunteers with some trail work experience, this level often includes tasks such as tread reshaping, rock armoring, and drainage improvements. Recommended for intermediate to advanced riders comfortable navigating variable terrain.

Advanced

This trail work requires significant physical effort, including heavy lifting and strenuous labor. Access to work areas typically requires further access or challenging components. Tasks may involve large rock placements, significant erosion control, and advanced tread restoration. Volunteers should be prepared for a physically demanding day in remote sections of a trail.

Specialist

Aimed at skilled individuals in construction and maintenance or those looking to develop these skills. This category includes specialized tasks like operating power tools, rigging, and technical trail work. Volunteers should have experience or training in professional trail building and repair tools and techniques. This opportunity suits those who are comfortable with contractor-level trail work.
