Hewlett Gulch

Trail Revitalization Project

Phase 1 - Bringing new life to one of the Poudre Canyon’s most beloved trails

Just a short drive from Fort Collins, Hewlett Gulch is the most visited multi-use trail in the Canyon Lakes Ranger District. The beginner friendly terrain, meandering through the lower gulch, with seasonal water flow through the numerous creek crossings is a favorite for hikers, families, and dog-walkers alike. This section used as a warm up for the upper loop adventurous hikers, runners, and cyclist find themselves exposed to the sun on narrow tread, rolling climbs and sweeping views of the area’s rugged beauty.

The Project

Phase 1 of the Hewlett Gulch Revitalization Project will create a sustainable reroute on the northernmost segment of the trails loop. This new section will aim to bring users closer to the gulch’s unique ecosystem, rock formations, and panoramic vistas.

Our Goals

  1. Design and build a reroute that highlights the trail’s natural beauty and encourages positive interactions between all trail users.

  2. Use proven sustainable trail practices to ensure Hewlett Gulch can handle heavy year-round use for decades to come.

  3. Create an inviting trail experience that inspires more people to explore the Poudre Canyon for the first time.
