Great Things Happening at Curt Gowdy and Glendo
August 7, 2010 by bikekor
Volunteers and Trails Enthusiasts! First, Curt Gowdy State Park trails are in its final stages of development. This year we completed Middle Kingdom trail, as well as a major downhill route, and a bridge. We have connected Crystal Ridge with Canyons trail, finished up the skills area near Aspen Grove, and created three new play areas. We added cattle guards and took down some gates.
We have also completed an updated Gowdy Map. Hard copies are available at the park.
We are finishing up Skin and Bones which will feature several advanced downhill runs. A group of us gets together randomly during the week to build trail. If you want to participate in this, please let me know and I will get you on a separate email list.
The next Curt Gowdy Volunteer day will occur on August 21st. We will meet at Twin Lakes Creek Group Shelter. We have some culverts to install, and some basic trail maintenance.
If you can't make the August 21st volunteer day, see if you can make the September 18th work.
As always, we will have a lunch sponsor. The August event will be hosted by Rock On Wheels(Cheyenne) and the September event will be hosted by Bicycle Station.
On another note, we have been building trails at Glendo State Park since April 1st, 2010. As of this posting, we have nearly 4 miles of advanced and intermediate trail. We have had two Wyoming Conservation Corps crews, a volunteer day, and as of this week, a professional trail builder. By the end of this season we hope to have nearly 8 to 9 miles of trail build in a 60 to 70 proposed system. If you are interested in volunteering at Glendo, please mark your calendar for September 11th. We always are building and if another time works for you, let me know, and I will set up a day to get you there.
On August 14th, Glendo State Park will host an Introduction to Mountain Biking class at 9 a.m. This event will allow participants to ride the new trails, practice riding through cones and other obstacles. This event is open to ages ten and up . You must bring your own bike and helmet. Emphasis will be on basic riding technique and safety. Please contact Todd Stevenson 307-836-2334, or Dusty Humphreys 307-735-4433 to reserve your spot. This event is limited to the first twenty. Please bring your own lunch.
One again, we hope that you participate at either Glendo or Gowdy this summer and fall. If you can't please come out and see all the wonderful things Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails is doing.
As always, entrance fees are waived for volunteers and also include the mountain bike class. While you are at the park, why not stay a night and enjoy the park at night.
Thank you,
Paul Gritten
